Sam and Lindsay gone this week

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Hey everyone,

Lindsay and I are going to be gone this week, starting on Wednesday. We will be attending the Drug Policy Alliance‘s International Reform Conference in Los Angeles, from November 2 to 6. So, that means we won’t be in our office hours, won’t have our radio show or Daily Campus article this week, and I won’t be very able to respond to my emails.

We’ll be back on Sunday and will then be back to work, and will be sure to bring what we learn back to UConn so we can improve drug policies at both the campus and state level.

Seeking a student to serve on search committee for the Vice Provost for Engagement and International Affairs

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Hey undergrads,

If you’ve been reading the Daily Digest, as I know you all have, you’ve probably heard of the new position UConn just created: the Vice Provost for Engagement and International Affairs. Among other roles, the new Vice Provost will work with faculty on increasing UConn’s participation in international programs and partnerships, making UConn not just a leader nationally, but globally.

As with all search committees at UConn, there will be an undergraduate student serving on the committee. (S)he will work to ensure that the student voice is heard in the selection process. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to be involved in shaping the leadership of our University, while learning about the selection process at a public institution.

Meeting times have not yet been determined, but the search is expected to be completed by mid-December 2011.

Please email me a letter of intent, one page maximum, to president@usg.uconn.edu if you are interested in serving on the committee.

Seeking a Chair for the Metanoia on Community Civility

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Hello UConn Undergrads,

There is an incredible leadership opportunity open for an interested undergrad.

USG, GSS, and the University Senate have been working for many months on creating a Metanoia on Community Civility at UConn, to take place this year. The planning is now in its final stages. We are currently seeking chairs for the metanoia committee, and as Student Body President, I am in charge of appointing the student co-chair.

As co-chair of the committee, you would work with the faculty co-chair (as yet to be chosen) to plan and execute the metanoia. Its broad focus is community civility, but the chairs would be able to take an active role in shaping it. For some background, the metanoia proposal came out of violence associated with Spring Weekend. However, many felt that it should be broader, and address civility as a whole, with Spring Weekend violence only being one aspect (of course, a major aspect).

For those unfamiliar with metanoias, the most recent one at UConn was focused on Violence Against Women and took place in 2009. Many great initiatives sprung up due to the metanoia. You can read about it here.

If you are interested, email me a letter of intent (one page maximum) to president@usg.uconn.edu. Letters will be accepted until 5pm on Friday, November 4.

Join a University Committee!

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Hey UConn students! Do you want to get involved on campus in a way that will really affect you and your fellow students? As USG President, I am in charge of appointing student members to a number of committees – including ones that determine what the W requirements are, help plan construction on campus, and decide whether your parking ticket appeal is approved or not!

If you are interested in serving on any of these committees, please email me (at president@usg.uconn.edu) a letter of intent (no more than one paragraph) explaining why you think you would be a good fit for the committee. Letters will be accepted on a rolling basis until all the positions are filled.

Here is a list of the committees that still need student representatives. All committees have one position open, unless otherwise noted.
I do NOT have the meeting times for these committees – many are still in development. So apply if you are interested, and if you find that it conflicts with your class schedule, feel free to back out and I will find a replacement.

Keeping Connecticut’s Brightest Here

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Hey all! I am proud to have just signed on to a letter, written by USG External Affairs Chair Ethan Senack, urging our state lawmakers to commit to making Connecticut a better place for recent college grads. The letter is being circulated among all of CT’s Student Body Presidents, and once signed, will be sent to our elected officials before their upcoming Special Session.

Attached is the letter, I encourage you to check it out and urge your own representatives to keep Connecticut’s brightest here in the state!
